Designing & Installing Commercial Sound Systems: A Comprehensive Guide

Make Your Business’s Audio System Sound Great

Audio systems play a crucial role in any commercial space. Whether for background music in a chic restaurant or a PA system in an industrial facility, a well-designed audio system can make or break the experience and operations.

For example, imagine a restaurant with music playing so loud it’s impossible for guests to engage in conversation. Or consider a retail store that’s so eerily quiet customers feel uncomfortable staying too long. If these businesses had a well-designed commercial audio system, customers would have an entirely different experience.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the necessary steps to design and install a commercial sound system. See how it can benefit your Tampa business!

The Site Survey: The Foundation of Your Audio System

Before diving into the intricacies of system design, it's crucial to understand the unique requirements of your Tampa space. Here's what we need to do during the initial site survey:

Determine the Purpose

We begin by understanding the primary purpose of each room. Will audio be used for background music, PA announcements, or a combination of both? This information will influence the speaker system design.

Accurate Dimensions

We perform a thorough walkthrough of the space and gather room dimensions. We’ll use CAD drawings to map optimal speaker placement.

Measure Ambient Sound

We then use a dB meter to measure the ambient sound levels in the room. This measurement is critical for ensuring that your audio system can be heard clearly above any existing noise.

Consider Room Characteristics

Keep in mind that some rooms may be challenging due to reflections and large open spaces. In such cases, we may need specialized solutions like network horns to ensure optimal sound distribution.

System Design: Calculating Speaker Requirements

Once we have gathered the necessary information during the site survey, it's time to move on to system design. Here are the key considerations:

  • Coverage Calculation: Speakers have different dispersion angles, and we can calculate the area they’ll cover using the formula for the area of a circle (A = πr²).
  • Premium vs. Basic Solution: A premium speaker solution typically requires twice as many speakers as a basic system. While this may seem like an investment, it ensures that music won't fade out of earshot, providing a superior listening experience.
  • Speaker Quantity: To calculate the final number of speakers required for your room, we need to determine the ambient noise level, the area of the room, and the speaker mounting height.

Understanding Background Noise Levels

Understanding the ambient noise level in your space is crucial, as it directly impacts the effectiveness of your audio system. Here are some guidelines to consider:

  • Announcements and Paging Calls: These need to be at least +12dB higher than the ambient noise level to ensure they are clearly heard. This can be challenging in noisy environments like industrial facilities and restaurants.
  • Background Music: For pleasant background music, we aim for a volume of 3-6 dB higher than the ambient noise level. Background music typically blends in at around 76 dB.
  • Foreground Music: When you want music to be more apparent, such as in entertainment areas, we target a volume of around 70 dB.
  • Distance Considerations: Remember that sound diminishes as you move away from the source. A speaker loses 6 dB for every doubling of distance from the listener or listening area. We account for this when designing your system.

Once we’ve concluded how many speakers are necessary and where they should be mounted, we can begin the installation process. Whether you prefer wall-mounted, in-wall, or in-ceiling speakers, we can source equipment that complements the room with hidden wiring for a clean aesthetic.
