Your Starter’s Guide to Stereo Sound Systems

Note: This blog was originally published in 2018 and has been updated in 2024.

If you love listening to music and are ready to improve your home, we have a definite recommendation for you:

Consider a real speaker system for your property—not just a portable speaker.

You could go for a whole-home or multi-room audio solution, or you could just focus on a single room. No matter what you choose, you will be able to enjoy high-fidelity and lifelike sound with high-end speakers.

In this blog, we’ll focus on those single-room audio solutions. Much of the time, our clients in the Tampa, FL, area aren’t sure whether they want surround sound or two-channel audio for their speaker arrangement.

For us, the answer is clear if you are an audiophile or you just love music: Go for the stereo sound solution. Here’s why.

What Does Two-Channel Audio Include?

Not sure what the difference is between two-channel (stereo) sound and surround sound?

Here’s the main variance: While stereo sound consists of both a left and a right speaker in front of you, a surround sound arrangement includes speakers in front of you, to the sides of you and even behind you.

Two-channel sound, meanwhile, uses two speakers and an amplifier to create a 3D “soundstage” that feels like a real, in-person concert. With a stereo setup, you’ll achieve a much fuller sound than simply using one speaker like many people do today.

This leads us to the all-important question: Why two-channel audio instead of surround sound?

Why Stereo Instead of Surround Sound?

There’s plenty of reason to choose stereo speakers instead of surround sound for your music-listening enjoyment.

But the most significant reason is this: Music recorded in studios actually is produced in stereo sound.

That means when you use a two-channel speaker arrangement, the music you’ll be listening to truly reflects the original version of the track. During the mixing stage of creating an album, musical elements are sent to either the left or right side of the stereo mix. Some parts, like lead vocals, tend to be mixed in the center, and will emit from both left and right speakers at an equal volume level. Surrounding the vocals are instruments on the left and right, creating a realistic, ‘full’ sound.

So if your primary focus is on music listening, go for stereo (two-channel). You don’t need a whole surround sound setup. With high-quality stereo speakers, you’ll hear music in such perfect detail, it will be like hearing your favorite songs for the first time again.

How to Build Your Stereo Setup

So, how can you ensure the best two-channel speaker arrangement in your home?

It’s simple: Work with a high-end audio professional that not only can help you find the right solution for your space but also can precisely install it to your wants and needs. Your installer even can make sure the audio from your speakers will sound balanced and natural relative to where your seating might be.
