Home theater technology keeps improving whether you are ready for it or not. TV technology is no different, with the latest innovations coming in the form of OLED TVs. With new models becoming available on a regular basis now, it's safe to say that OLED display technology is here to stay.
What is OLED?
OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode, so the OLED TVs on the market are fundamentally similar to LED TVs in that each pixel is made up of LEDs. Each OLED supplies it's own light, as compared to other TV technology which requires a backlight to properly display the image onscreen. Because of this, the black level attainable with OLED technology is drastically better than with the LED displays. With OLEDs, you will have a much better color, clarity, and contrast.
With other display technologies, the backlighting consumes a fair amount of energy. Since the OLEDs are their own light source, when the pixel is black the OLED is turned off, saving a considerable amount of energy. The OLED display will also be significantly lighter than other displays and the entire TV is under a quarter inch thick, compared to the current standard of almost three quarters of an inch for "thin LED" TVs.
Design Considerations
As with any new technology, OLED TVs are available in a limited number of product lines right now. With LED TVs, there was a point of diminishing returns as screen sizes increased. OLED TVs have greatly surpassed this breaking point, and manufacturers are capitalizing on this fact by offering OLED TVs in the 55" and larger range. While there are enough models available to suit the needs of any home theater system, if you are looking to put smaller OLED TVs in your bedrooms or kitchen, that will have to wait for now. You will benefit the most from upgrading your current home theater display to an OLED TV.
Because most manufacturers want to show off the fact that each TV contains OLED technology, these new displays are curved. This might take some getting used to at first, but with the enormity of the TV screen, over time having a curved display will be advantageous as you can enjoy a closer viewing range without distortion and feel completely immersed.
Is it Compatible?
Luckily, there is no change in display format or connector technology from other displays to the new OLED TVs. They are still able to display full 1080p HD content, and capable of connecting wirelessly to any streaming devices, or with an HDMI input. The difference lies in what the OLED TVs do with the content, and that's where you'll see deep colors and incredible black levels.
The display ratio is the same as other TVs and the depth of the new OLED TVs is substantially thinner. If you are looking to replace an existing TV with a new OLED TV of the same size, you should have no concerns about it fitting in the same space.
